Afrikaners do it better:) Ever in search of an amazing book bargain at fétes, i can happily state that one of the best i’ve attended was this past Saturday at Kruiskerk, Knysna’s NG Kerk in Fichat Street.
Ironically, the book stall was one of the smallest i’ve seen and, according to others i spoke to, much smaller than last year’s. Nevertheless, i grabbed a huge smile with my purchase of The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (R3) and the dvds of the Long Way Down television series (R10!). From there, the good morning continued strongly.
The first step towards this successful féte was attendance. On arrival, cars stretched the whole length of one side of the road and, on the other, they had started parking on the pavement. Inside, the main hall, there was still space for people but within 20 minutes i was happily jostling for space at each stall.
The second successful step the church made was variety. There were traditions such as tea gardens and pancakes but also vegetables and 1kg wors packs. The sweet stall offered more option than i’d ever seen in Knysna.
My favourite became the dessert stall where you could choose a bit of everything to be squeezed yummily into a container. My malva pudding, trifle, chocolate mouse and more cost only R6. I got carried away with different combinations so that i found myself in possession of a tray of goodies that made for tasty gifts to locals i met in Woodmill Lane later:)
Most importantly, the people behind the stalls, the church’s volunteers, were very friendly – all of them!
